  • Zimmer NexGen Knee

Zimmer® Knees have a high rate of reported failure.  If you or a loved one has this knee implanted, you need to contact the Garrett Law Center today.  If you have had a revision surgery, your doctor is advising a revision surgery, or cannot have a revision surgery because of medical condition, you may be entitled to financial compensation because of a product that was improperly made by the manufacturer.

Hip replacements are a common procedure, and when this kind of treatment is required, Zimmer ® is the largest manufacturer of knee replacements. Their NexGen® knee replacement is made from a high-flex, porous, non-cement femoral component, which is designed to replace and envelope the head of the femur. Approximately 150,000 of these implants have been sold since 2003.

Patients and the FDA are finding that the Zimmer® NexGen® knee replacements have a high rate of failure. A recall on the device has been issued by two orthopedic surgeons who made careful observations of their patients and after presenting their findings. The doctors operate out of Rush University Medical Center where they noticed dangerous red flags regarding Zimmer ® NexGen® knee replacements. There are three types on knees that are of interest:

    • Zimmer® NexGen CR Flex®
    • Zimmer® NexGen LPS Flex®
    • Zimmer® Gender Solution® (both the CR and LPS)

After two years of observing 108 patients who had this knee replacement, doctors Craig Della Valle and Richard Berger discovered that 9.3% (9 patients) of implants had to be reset due to pain and looseness, and another 36% (39 patients) of them had come completely loose. Although knee replacements eventually wear out and require new replacements, they should last longer than merely two years. Some symptoms may include but not be limited to:

    • Grinding
    • Inability to flex or extend the knee
    • Instability when standing and/or walking
    • Chronic pain
    • Loosening of the implant
    • Dislocation

The danger of Zimmer ® putting these “High-Flex” devices in is also under review. Typically people may have had up to 120 degrees of felxation.  By replacing them with a “High-Flex” knee was purportedly able to flex to 150 degrees.  Unfortunately the knee will never flex more than it currently does, so some of these surgeries may have been unnecessary and unduly risky.

If you have already had your revision surgery contact the Garrett Law Center today so that you claim can be included in those being reviewed.
